Your Cake Kitchen: Introduction

Floral arrangements like this truly are a
work of art. But this little masterpiece can be appreciated on more than one level!
These sugary sculptures have been created to adorn a cake, but they might be better
suited to a gallery than a desert table. This is just a taste of the offerings from
Your Cake Kitchen at Ormiston. It’s a treasure trove of tools and supplies
for all types of sweet creations, and owner Jennifer Williams is the “Willy Wonker” of
cake decorating. Cooking and creating beautiful delicious treats is in
your blood isn’t it? Absolutely yes, my Grandparents were Chefs
in Europe so we grew up from a very young age behind a stove and cooking and making
Tortes and all sorts of German Cakes. This is only a small space but it is jam packed
with everything to do with Cake making and Decorating.
Yes, we try and keep up with the local trends and things, but also overseas.
It’s not all just about supplies, you also hold classes?
Yes, we do, we teach the Wilton Program and I’m the most highly………
Decorated I guess? Decorated, that’s it, that’s the one.
So we’ll concentrate on putting some lovely flowers on top of your cupcakes today. so
if you take your piping bags and put a little bit of colour……….
The program runs over sixteen weeks and takes a beginner through all the basic techniques
they require to create edible art. As my mum would always say “you have to taste
it first to see if it’s poisonous, it’s not poisonous!) We are good to go Jenni, we are
good to go. This rowdy little Class is a lot of fun but
these creations can be serious business as well. Some of Jennifers students are now professional
Cake Decorators. What’s the verdict ladies?
(all) Beautiful! I’m pretty happy with it.
It’s amazing how creative you can be with a piping bag and a bucket load of Buttercream
Icing! One Cookie monster with a cookie mouth, what
do you reckon? I reckon he’s pretty good. More advanced Students use a balling tool,
veiners, and royal icing in a class that takes Cake Decorating to a whole other level.
World renowned Master Sugar Artist and local Ekka Judge Helen Dissell also teaches regular
classes and shares her expert knowledge. So balling first the edges, and you see the
more pressure you apply, the curlier it becomes. Intricate flower arrangements in Royal icing
are Helens Speciality and some takes months to plan and a great deal of skill, and patience,
to pull off! Do you have to be creative or have that artistic
flair … to do this? Or is it something you can learn along the
way? I think that it’s learnt with a sense of passion,
umm and a good knowledge foundation. I don’t think that I’ve got a creative flair in me
at all! Stop it! Are you serious?
I’m serious! But how, and is what you do… this you just
learn this along the way? I feel it’s like gardening, I feel a garden,
I feel my sugar, and I the balance and the proportions.
It’s like your speaking poetry, I just love it so much!
Discover more about Helens Garden of sugary blooms in her book or learn the techniques
first hand in a lesson. Classes at Your Cake Kitchen cover more than
just Cake Decorating and Royal icing. You can also learn how to make a range of sweet
treats, including cookies, cake pops, and chocolate What do I do now? Ahhhhhhhhh!
