National Wonders – The Olney Pancake Race

National Wonders – The Olney Pancake Race

– Hi, my name’s Ben and I’m
here in Olney, Buckinghamshire. For nearly 700 years,
women have been taking part in a Pancake Race. Not the same women, that
would be ridiculous. Who are these women? Where are they running to? Where are they running from? And why is a small town in
Kansas so worried about it? As part of our National
Wonders tour we asked, is this really how the U.K. spends a day? So I’m here with Ollie. Are we gonna beat Kansas today? – Well, I hope so! – I hope so too. – Yeah, so do I. – In the 1950s, Kansas asked
if they could challenge us to the race. So over in America, they do
the race at the same time as we do, on the same day. – Spot on. – Who’s gonna win the race today? – [Kids] Olney! – [Firemen] Olney. – [Women] Olney! – I’m here with Valerie and Molly. – That’s right. – You look amazing. – Thank you. – We get people from all over the world coming to this thing. There are people from Edinburgh, found somebody from
Japan who’s here today. – 2018 winner of the Olney Pancake Race. – Excited, yeah, I can’t
believe it, really. – Really? This is Olney. This is the Olney Pancake Race, and this is a National Wonder.
