“Garden Tips” from The Home of President Andrew Jackson – Video 1

My name’s Michael Grantham I am the Historic Garden Manager Here at The Hermitage and we’re dealing with Rose Rosette disease in roses, and it is a virus that is effecting all roses and usually the easiest sign is this distorted
growth discolored some of this is still green but you can start to see this pinkish color to it warty growth that is just nasty looking there’s no cure for it only thing to do is prune it out of the plant which we pruned it out of this double Chestnut Rose, just prune it back as far as you can go with it and after each cut and especially in between this rose bush and the next one you want
sterilizer pruners saw whatever instrument you use you know sterilizer
with the rubbing alcohol or I’ve use peroxide or bleach water solution to anything though wall kill the the
virus and once you’re done with each plant or you remove any the
infected material bag it and put in the trash do not put it in the compost pile or throw it in the woods get rid of it immediately don’t let the stuff sit
around this is a big threat to all roses historic and non-historic especially in here when you have these large chestnut roses brand new roses that we just planted here in the garden try to
do anything we can to protect them so that about all we can do as far as dealing with this threat
