Creating the Floppy Elephant Toy Cake – Cakes by Kim Simons

Hi, I’m Kim Simons and I’m a member of the
Food Artist group. I like to play with my food! So today, I’d like to take you through a quick process of me making a floppy elephant out of cake. I’m going to start working on the cute aspect
of my cake right now. So I’m just gonna build some basic structure and I’m gonna cover him up with gum paste so that I can paint him later because I like to work in black and white
and do all my details later. Grrrrrr. I’m like a baby dinosaur. I definitely
don’t look like no mouse. I’m working on the basic body of this elephant. Well he kind of looks like a turtle, but once I put his ears and his big trunk you’ll see the elephant. I don’t like things to look totally perfect and even. Actually when I put the fondant on him with the squishing and stuff that I do, it’s gonna shape him
up to look like the elephant he’s meant to be I’m known for using this technique, when I make teddy bears. They think I’m absolutely nuts to use these little scissors on a big area like this. I’m the MacGyver of cake. Don’t leave your tools around because I will take them and use them! Not for what they’re meant to be used for because who uses this on sugar and fondant? Me! When I paint, I tend to get a lot of texture. Everybody likes their things so clean and white and shiny. I dirty things up, which gives it a more realistic look. These colors are amazing and they’re just pure sugar. Actually when you open them up you can smell them; they’re very sweet. I am so tired! I’ve been working the whole
day today over 9 hours now, so I’m trying to get most of the major detail done now. I’m gonna do a lot tonight and then tomorrow we’ll see the finished product. It’s already
looking cool.
