Cake Decorating Ideas & Tips: Ruffled Icing Technique | Hobby Lobby

Are you new to the world of cake decorating? Well, it all starts with the icing! And today we’re gonna show you an easy,
but impressive technique. Buttercream ruffles! Decorating tips come in a huge range of styles. And they’re used to create fun borders,
rosettes and more. To start decorating any cake, you’ll need
the tip of your choice, plus a decorating bag, a coupler, some icing, and some gel color. First, you’ll prep the bag. Just push the coupler base into the pointed
end. Mark where you see the last ridge of the base,
that’s where you’ll cut. Push the coupler base back into the bag, poking
the end through the opening. Then place the decorating tip over the coupler
base, and screw the ring into place. Now we’re ready for the buttercream. We want to create an ombre effect for this
cake. So we’re dividing the icing into three bowls,
adding more gel color to the darkest bowl and less to each subsequent bowl. Place the icing in the bag, and you’re ready
to decorate. To make your ruffles, you’ll use a number
127 petal tip. With the wide end of the tip touching the
cake, form the ruffles by applying consistent pressure and moving the tip up and down as
you work in a line. About a third of the way up, switch to your
medium color. Then switch to your lightest color, about
two thirds of the way up. And that’s it! When the ruffles are done, you can top your
cake with any food-safe embellishment. Ready to try your hand at another design? You’ll find tons of ideas in “Cakes That
Inspire,” available at Hobby Lobby and hobbylobby.com.
